The techniques for staining come in a wide variety of methods as you research about it but generally I would suggest sampling a piece of wood prior. A sample is key and you want to ensure the methods, steps involved, time periods waiting in between applications, as these steps are essential for maintaining consistency.

Create a stain wood piece sample; this can be used as a guide. Remember to hold it up in different types of lighting so that you can gain a full visibility of the reflective properties in different lighting. Matching stains is a difficult task no matter the years of experience. The key is to ensure consistency that once you create a stain that you feel matches well to recreate that same stain with the same mixture. if the stain comes out slighlty diffferently than the sample do not be surprised all wood species have different hydroscopic properties, grain, texture, even when sanding fully with a specific type of sandpaper there can still be a slight variation. This is I consider to be normal.

Some important tips for staining by hand is to always wear gloves. Not just any gloves. make sure they are the appropiate gloves used for staining that are resistant to the stain compound so that they will not deteriorate in the process of doing your wood staining work. This is important especially when you are spending a lot of time on a project. Getting stain on your hands is not pleasant and difficult to wash off with the appropiate cleaners.
