Custom Framed Shower Niche Sizes

Custom Shower Niches are a great feature to any renovated bathroom and can be done only when the existing framing and tile layout will permit for it. In some cases existing homes are built with much larger framed openings for standard tubs. When this is the case; as long as the wall is non-load bearing the framing can be modified to allow for a deeper shelf shower/tub wall niche.

A great tip for building these shower niches is to cut out your opening for the niche first. REmember to allow for the width and thicknesses of your framing material that you will be using to build the niche so that the finished niche will be as close to the measurements you and your client desire for there shower niche. It is always better to make the niche slightly larger as adjusting it to making it smaller is always going to be much easier than making adjustments to make it larger.

I would suggest using screws during constructing custom size shower/tub wall niches. It will be easier to make it solid and less worry of framing nails to split the wood framing. Remember to install nailers that will be used for your sub-Base (Cement Board) Or Similar-Like Based Material so that it can be glued and attached.
