Speed Square - “1980’s Old School Tricks of the Trades”
Ever purchase a speed square that was difficult to read as the sun starts to set because the edging of the incremental measurements blends in with the metal finish of the speed Square? This works with most speed squares but not necessarily all of them.
The old school 1980’s trick for this is; get a can of black spray paint, or a color spray paint can that is of the opposite color or darker shade than your speed square. Spray paint the entire speed square. Let the paint set for a few seconds/minutes depending on weather. Then use the thinning product for the spray paint can “Mineral spirits” or similar and gently wipe the paint off the speed square; making sure that the paint stays inside the grooves like the photos attached for this post. Take your time with this; especially if it is your first time doing it.
It might not come out perfect the first time but after a couple practice runs you will be able to read the engraved measurements better on your speed square! The paint should remain inside the edged grooves of the measurements with a nice clean metal finish for your speed square!
See the photo attached to this post! The photo speaks for itself! Thanks! Enjoy this Contractor tip of the Day!
